A fuerza de honradez y fidelidad, fue ocupando una posici\u00f3n muy diferente a la de su original oficio de mucamo; lleg\u00f3 a ser el hombre de confianza, el que se ocupa de su dinero y bienestar. \u201cYo me he dejado ganar poco a poco por este hombre que es el arquetipo de la lealtad y el servicio prestado con cari\u00f1o y devoci\u00f3n. Hace unos d\u00edas me mostr\u00f3 su tesoro m\u00e1s preciado: un pu\u00f1ado de cartas que le he ido escribiendo a trav\u00e9s de los a\u00f1os. Not\u00e9 que son bastantes: creo que es la persona a la que me he dirigido epistolarmente con m\u00e1s asiduidad\u201d, contaba F\u00e9lix. Tambi\u00e9n confesaba que durante su vida pol\u00edtica tuvo que acostumbrarse a no \u201centregarse demasiado\u201d, cuidar sus palabras y administrar sus sentimientos, pero sin embargo, Gumersindo demostraba ser completamente diferente a eso.
